Description

Diabetes is characterized by abnormal excessive levels of sugar glucose in the blood, which is consequently passed through the urine. An excessive amount of glucose chronically present in the blood causes a variety of serious health complications. Diabetics have excessive blood glucose because of a deficiency in the production or utilization of the hormone insulin. Insulin is made by the beta cells of the pancreas in response to the elevated glucose in the blood after a meal. Insulin stimulates cells to remove glucose from the blood, stimulates the liver to metabolize glucose, and thus, causes the blood sugar level to return to normal. Diabetics have either deficiency of insulin or defective insulin receptor binding. As a result, the cells of the body are not able to receive the glucose energy, despite the energy source present in the blood. Chronic diabetes can lead to serious problems with the eyes, kidneys, nervous system, gums and teeth, and heart.

Testing
Some of the home testings can be done with a small portable machine called blood glucose meter with the use of lancets, lancing devices, and test strips. Glucose control solution is used to test the accuracy and efficiency of test strips and glucose monitors. It is a type of fake blood that ensures you about the safety of test strips and meters. Regular testing is key to managing glucose levels to keep diabetes in control.

Insulin Facts
Standard Insulin contains 100 units in 1 ml. This is also called U100 insulin. Most insulin syringes are marked for giving U-100 insulin. Every small notch is a unit on a standard of 1ml syringe to 1 unit of insulin.
Insulin syringes are made for self-injecting and have friendly features. Shorter needles as insulin injectors are subcutaneous (under the skin) rather than intramuscular. Finer needles are for less pain.

Helpful tips when buying insulin syringes:

– Needle gauge is between 28 gauge to 31 gauge. The larger the number, the smaller the gauge. An Ultra Fine II brand needle is the smallest and Ultra Fine is next size up.
– Needle length: Common needle lengths are 12.7mm (1/2”) to 8mm (5/16”). The 8mm needle is called short, with a length that is most preferred by people.
– Barrel size: The barrel size determines how much insulin the syringe can hold. For example, a 3/10cc syringe is best for 30 units or less, 1/2cc syringe is best for 30-50 units, and 1cc is best for injections of 50-100 units.
